Headlines for March 27, 2020
Worst, Most Misleading & Funniest Headlines for Mar. 27, 2020
*Whenever I Throw Away a Mask, I Think of Venezuela and I Freak Out
Subhead: The coronavirus will ravage the country’s already devastated health system.
This Venezuelan doctor is so concerned about the Venezuelan people that she left the country and is now practicing in Spain, and in a 1000-word article only blames the problems in Venezuela's medical system on "decades of poor management and corruption", and never mentions U.S. sanctions, much less calls for an end to those sanctions.
*Bernie Sanders Plans to Participate in Next Debate, Campaign Says
The headline (and the article which follows) buries the lede — Biden has said “no more debates” (and given the DNC preference for him, that’s the likely result).
*Why CEOs are giving up their salaries during the coronavirus crisis
Professor from Wharton says: “it's a signal that they are sharing the pain.” That, and their salary for last year will last them for another ten.
*Texas Tries to Balance Local Control With the Threat of a Global Pandemic
Original headline: Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick Suggests Seniors Willing to Die for U.S. Economy
*The Coronavirus Exposes Education’s Digital Divide
Original headline: The Coronavirus Exposes China’s Digital Divide in Education
More China-bashing.
*The West Is Misinterpreting Wuhan's Coronavirus Progress
changed to: China’s Progress Against Coronavirus Used Draconian Tactics Not Deployed in the West
*The U.S. traditionally leads in times of crisis. Now it’s practicing self-isolation, and its rivals are stepping in.
No, that’s Cuba you’re thinking of. Article points to Ebola, also climate agreements.
*U.S. to Iran: Coronavirus won't save you from sanctions
Psychopathic headline of the week. Add to this with this headline:
Pompeo calls for humanitarian release of wrongfully detained Americans in Iran amid coronavirus outbreak
Imagine using the word "humanitarian" and then bragging about policies likely to add tens of thousands to the death toll in Iran.
*Fauci gets frank about Trump: ‘I can’t jump in front of the microphone and push him down’
Funny not funny.
China’s coronavirus lockdown — brought to you by authoritarianism
Dated Jan. 26. The whole “China lied, people died” is just an attempt to smear China. The U.S. had plenty of warning and did nothing — not production of masks and tests, not social distancing, not recommending more hand washing, nothing. Five days later Trump banned travel from China, the first U.S. response.
Pompeo says China, Russia, Iran are spreading disinformation about coronavirus
The single piece of evidence is this tweet: “When did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected?” tweeted Lijian Zhao, a spokesman at the Foreign Ministry’s Information Department. “What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US Army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!”
Related: Twitter says coronavirus disinformation spread by Chinese officials does not violate rules
“Officials” (plural) in the headline and “tweets” (plural) in the article apparently refer to that single tweet by that single spokesperson, which is speculation, not disinformation.
