Annan irony


On a day when the news is about the death of Augusto Pinochet (although much less about the U.S. role in the coup that brought him to power), outgoing U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan had this to say:
"This country [the U.S.] has historically been in the vanguard of the global human rights movement. But that lead can only be maintained if America remains true to its principles"
Sorry, Kofi, the U.S. surrendered its role long before the advent of the current administration. Try reading this morning's paper for a reminder. Or perhaps you could talk to Michelle Bachelet's father about it. Oh wait, you can't. He was tortured to death thanks to that U.S. "vanguard" commitment to human rights.
